I feel deeply part of the SBSK community, founded in 2016 by Chris Ulmer and his wife, Alyssa Porter, through Special Books by Special Kids. There’s no need to explain what they do, their work speaks volumes, but I want to share what I feel every time I watch their videos.
There’s something truly magical about Chris’s interviews. The ease with which he connects with men, women, and children facing unimaginable challenges is nothing short of extraordinary. His questions, so sincere and heartfelt, seem to pierce straight to the core of human emotion.
He draws out joy, discomfort, hope, and fear, all without ever crossing the line of respect. There’s a dignity in his actions, in the way he listens, that makes me think every time: “This is what humanity looks like when it uplifts Life.”
Through SBSK, I’ve encountered stories of people who face life with a strength and love that leave me in awe. Their eyes may carry pain, yet they also reflect extraordinary courage. Each story feels like an invitation to look beyond our fears, beyond our limitations.
And no, SBSK’s videos avoid sugarcoated happy endings. What they share is the unfiltered truth, paired with the remarkable resilience of these individuals.
I can’t help but feel profoundly grateful for the work Chris and Alyssa do. Their dedication has profoundly transformed my perspective on the world. Even a small blog like this one wants to say: thank you.
Thank you, Chris and Alyssa, for continuing to show me that, even in life’s darkest moments, humanity can shine its brightest light. Thank you for reminding me that behind suffering, there can be life, selflessness, strength, and love, if we choose to see it.
